My heart breaks whenever I remember M’s dad. He worked so hard for his family – his wife and two daughters. M is a classmate of mine. I knew their story because I became close with M. And my dad became friends with M’s dad, too. M’s parents were originally from the province. They went to the city for greener pasture. Lucky for them, they did find the business that would put their family to the right path. Or so they thought.
M and her sister finished high school. But M’s older sister, whom their parents thought was about to graduate from BS Physical Therapy, was actually squandering her tuition money with a guy she met somewhere. When their parents found out, M’s older sister was already pregnant and wouldn’t be graduating because she’s a year or so behind. M’s dad was devastated, of course. They were not expecting anything from their daughters in terms of giving back financially. They just wanted for the two to finish college so they can already go back to the province and settle there.
M’s dad died a few months ago. His hands were still dirty from being a mechanic. He never got to live his dream of settling in the province and being a simple barrio man once again. He couldn’t leave his daughters in the city because both were still unstable in life. This is the house that he had built for him and his wife…

I saw it in a social networking site where M and I are connected as friends. I just couldn’t help but remember her dad and how he’s put his hopes for a quiet and simple life in his daughters’ college degrees. He never got to enjoy living in that house. As you can see, it was left unfinished. He died not even reaping what he sowed for so long.
It’s just so sad.
You know what I realized while writing this down? That life is getting shorter and shorter and that we should make the most out of it every day of our lives. Let’s not wait for our twilight years before we can enjoy the benefits of our hard work. Enjoy it now! While you are still alive and kicking. And don’t pin all your hopes on something or someone or you will end up totally disappointed in the end.
